Information

The Mentawai Islands

The Mentawai Islands are a chain of about 70 islands off the W Coast of Sumatra in Indonesia, approx 150kms off the Sumatran coast. Mentawai waves have a legendary reputation for being amongst the best surf spots on the planet. Be blown away by luxurious cruising to beautiful islands, aqua blue waters & epic waves that will leave you breathless. The Maha Bintang will be the perfect accommodation for you & your group of friends for a surf trip to remember.

Your Mentawai Surf Charter Boat: The Maha Bintang

Maha Bintang is a 62 foot fibreglass motor launch designed and built in 2010 especially for surfing charters.  It has three showers and two toilets onboard a large saloon and dining area. There is a large deck area and plenty of room to laze around and rest up for your next session. It is fully air-conditioned throughout and with all the modern luxuries such a flat screen TV, DVD and stereo system.

The Maha Bintang sleeps 8 guests comfortably in two twin berth cabins and one four berth cabin. We will preferably be trying to book 6 guests per trip as we feel this will create a less crowded surf experience in the water and a more comfortable and intimate environment onboard the boat.

As far as safety is concerned, the Maha Bintang has state of the art navigational equipment and satellite phone for added safety.

The MAHA BINTANG has all the modern conveniences you would expect for your boat trip. It has a flat screen TV with DVD and a library of DVDs for your selection. We welcome our guests to bring along their own music and DVDs too. There is a great stereo player and internet can be accessed if you have wireless. There is power in all cabins so you can easily recharge cameras, laptops and iPods. You might want to bring along your mobile phone as well as there is often coverage in some of the surf locations. Books are also recommended for those lazy afternoons laying on the deck. We also offer snorkelling and fishing gear for those days when you would like a break from surfing to take in some of the dramatic Mentawai scenery and underwater playgrounds. Catching fresh fish for dinner is always greatly appreciated by your fellow surfers and the chef.

Meals and Drinks

We have a fantastic chef onboard who prepares three delicious gourmet meals every day. The meals on offer are varied and full of fresh ingredients that will keep you fuelled and ready for your hours of surfing each day. Those people with special dietary needs can inform us beforehand and we will pass this on to the chef. Snacks like fruit biscuits nuts and chocolate bars are also available for those people who cannot wait for the main meals.

Beers are provided daily - three per guest. But we can order more if the guests require more from Padang. Fresh water, juice soft drinks tea and coffee are readily available.

Surf Calendar and General Conditions

The biggest and most consistent time for waves in Mentawai’s is between March and November. The best overall months are May, June, July and August, so the waves are the biggest at most wave breaks. Tropical storms can be expected coming in from the Southern Indian Ocean and can cause additional big swells to the region early and late in the season.

Winds are pretty consistent and are fairly predictable from season to season. During April to October SE to SW winds are perfect for the left-hand breaks and NW to W winds favour the rights for the remainder of the year. Occasionally when the swell is not huge, the boat skipper can still find small waves at secret spots that will keep your surfing urges satisfied.

There are many different waves for all different levels of surfing experience available. The captain will always do his best to find a wave for everyone’s surfing level on the day, but in general, group decisions made amongst one another are helpful and avoid confusion.
